The Terminal in Trip's office glows ominously with a purple light. You enter in the password Xz16TS, and the screen unlocks, displaying a series of options.
>EMAIL
>ORDER
>DOCUMENTS
>UPDATE CRYSTAL EMULATOR
You click EMAIL first.
It appears that nearly all of the sent and received items have been deleted, save for a bunch of emails from Trip to runescape customer support begging for his password back.
The most recent one though, is distinctly not that.
Do you really have to run all your emails through that text filter?
Fine though, consider it done.
You’re a little confused. Who are these people supposed to be? Either way, you click ORDER next, which appears to pull up a short form you can use to order a bunch of audiovisual supplies for use in TV and film. You figure this is for whatever ghost show that Trip’s doing, and move on to the DOCUMENTS section.
There are two files here, labeled NOTICE and PROJECT TERROR ACTUALIZER - INFO. You click the NOTICE file.
Notice:
Attention all employees,
As you know, a former contract employee by the name of Elizabeth Grayson has been causing widespread problems for our teams in the field following her involvement in Incident 528. Previously, restraint has been exercised in dealing with Ms. Grayson and her activities, however our Director of Operations has resumed communications recently, and has asked that I update protocol on the matter.
As of this date, Elizabeth Grayson is to be treated as a Class A threat to company proceedings, and is to be dealt with using lethal force. If you encounter Ms. Grayson, please notify your department’s emergency contact to have a strike team deployed on location as soon as possible.
Employees working on the Island Restoration Project may disregard the above notice, as we can guarantee that she has not managed to locate and infiltrate the area. However, we ask that all employees remain vigilant, as the culprit is not above indirect, remote interference through means such as…
-Document Leaking
-Hacking
-Video Game Modification
-Anonymous Message Board Posts
Ms. Grayson is extremely dangerous, and cannot be allowed to continue her operations. As always, thank you for taking the time out of your day to plan the eventual demise of this incessant pest, and have a happy holidays from all of us in management.
Regards,
Morgan Pierce

You click the other file now, the PROJECT TERROR one.
PROJECT TERROR ACTUALIZER:
The Project Terror Actualizer is a machine that has been constructed alongside the XW Crystal Emulator using recovered data from the KG5 Talent Research Initiative at the behest of the Director of Operations. Project Terror was an AI construct developed using the Despair’s Wish crystal as a processor core, programmed with the unique trait of the Ultimate Analyst to monitor and learn special talents from those that died in its vicinity. This process was carried out using the Despair’s Wish’s tendency to power up when others die in its vicinity.
Project Terror itself was a failure, as the Despair’s Wish does not possess any sort of actual personality so to speak, leading to its eventual manifestation in the virtual world as a rampaging, mindless “big scary void monster”, to quote Dr. Richard Langley of the Neo World Project department. The secondary reason the project was abandoned is that there is little practical application for an AI with talents such as “playing music from Metal Gear Rising” or “having a keycard” without any sort of physical presence.
The useless array of talents provided for the project, was among other things, the reason for the firing of our previous Talent Acquisition Officer.
The Project Terror Actualizer seeks to remedy this however, by using 3D printing technology, a variety of DNA samples, and research into dark matter, as well as the recovered KG5 Initiative data and the Despair’s Wish to construct a physical form for Project Terror’s data. Complications have arisen, however, due to the unknown whereabouts of the Despair’s Wish’s primary component after Incident 528 and the yet unsolved problem of Project Terror still having no “personality” to drive and control it.
Either way, the machine has been constructed as requested, as The Director of Operations demands that it be completed, stating in his emails that none of the above problems will be any sort of issue.
Finally, you exit out into the main menu and click on the UPDATE CRYSTAL EMULATOR button. You are taken to a new screen with a progress bar in the center, sitting at about 60%.
Two buttons are below it, labeled
>CONNECT HARDWARE
>INFO
The button that says CONNECT HARDWARE is grayed out, likely because you haven’t connected this hardware it’s mentioning, but you click the INFO button, which opens a popup window.
info:
The XW Crystal Emulator has been created from the combined results of studies on the Despair’s Wish crystal, as well as recovered research on Project Terror and similar signal readings on on the “Four House Island”, named as such for the presence of the four mansions along the coast.
The strange signal coming from the island is much along the lines of the Despair’s Wish, albeit with a pattern that seems to affect temporal states in a radius rather than the spatial, darkness-based powers of the crystal that was formerly in our possession. Despite a scientist being placed on-site to locate it, no progress has been made on locating the source of this signal, which is why the XW Crystal Emulator exists to emulate the Despair’s Wish based on various gathered data.
The progress bar above displays signal gathering and decryption progress. When it is full, connecting the XW Crystal Emulator will allow the hardware to update, providing a usable alternative to the now-destroyed original.
