Idea: "Meta Discussion" for threads

In certain threads, it becomes necessary to discuss the thread itself, outside of the context of the actual posts. One example would be a forum game (like the Three Word Story) in which every post is expected to contribute to the story. But if we want to post the story progress as a whole, or comment on other peoples' contributions to the story, such posts would clutter the thread itself.

I think it would be cool if we had some sort of "Add a meta discussion to this thread" option, similar to the option for opening a poll. Once created, this thread would be unlisted in the board indexes, search results, and anywhere else apart from a "Meta discussion" link inside the thread itself. Basically it's like a "subthread" only accessible from the parent thread.

Does this sound like a good idea to anyone else?

This could have it's uses but I'm having trouble imagining it's implementation

I figure we'd put a button next to "New Reply" that just says "Meta Discussion", then when you go to the meta discussion itself it just looks like a normal thread but the button is replaced with "Return to main thread"

top and bottom of a thread page could have a meta discussion link that lights up if there's new posts in it. perhaps even an indicator on the board the thread's in for new meta discussion posts that's separate from the normal indicator, like a little icon to the side of the title?

uhhhhhhhhhhh not really sure how to feel bbout this. like what's the point really? if something's too irrelevant for the thread then it should prob just be in it's own & i dont see why the example you used couldnt just be a normal post

also would prob lead to some ridiculous passive aggression in shit like arguments

This too. I feel like this is a super specific solution to a problem that's unlikely to often occur.

It's not about being irrelevant. It's for relevant discussion about the thread at hand, as opposed to discussion which actually participates in the thread

It would pretty much only be useful for forum games and RPs, but I'd say those are two pretty common use cases

i dont see why discussion abt the thread has to be separate from discussion in the thread unl its irrelevant

and like tman said just the idea of extraneous discussion about the thread seems really situational and weird. like i said, what's the point really? whats to be gained here that cant be gained from just posting normally?

sounds meta, i like it
one concern i'd have is that it might be underutilized if it's hidden away within sub-menus. maybe meta-posts would appear in the main thread but have a different look to them? idk

ehhh yeah i can see it working ok for forum games but like i said i think it'd only be detrimental in serious threads so like mayb make it so it's only addable via mod approval or someshit

Blaster is on-point. That's the problem with these types of features, I guarantee you it'll be underutilized unless it's given equal billing (I'm sure there's already plenty of features people aren't aware exist because they're hidden away, like the Spell Statistics and Profile Banner.) Hell, even making polls could use some work. You have to make the thread and literally post it before making the poll? Fuck that.

like this idea too. just have a thing in the post creator that makes differently colored or bordered posts for meta/technically off-topic message use.

Yeah I could get behind this too, it would also be much simpler to implement.

Maybe meta posts could be smaller in some way? No avatar/sig for instance, or maybe a toggle to show/hide them
