i am back from the thing that i teased like an idiot, which was the
switch private event. i never saw anyone else discussing it so i had no idea if we could or not. it was in a private location and everything
etika, D1, and nairo were there and it was surreal seeing them a bunch of times when i was walking around the booths. ono was also there
x-post from dumblr:
i played all the big games they announced on-stream except for 1, 2,
switch. i didnt play many of the “smaller” games either. they had skylanders, disgaea 5, just dance, etc but i mainly focused on games i’d be more likely to get
i played mario kart 8 DX, a little bit of zelda, snipclippers, arms, sonic mania, splatoon 2, super bomberman R, and i think thats it. details are after the cut
mario kart 8 DX is what everyone expected, its really fun and the new battle mode is great. im curious to see what new courses were gonna get, should we get any at all. it also wasnt exactly clear in the trailer but the boo item still steals an item from another player
zelda i mostly played to get a handle of the switch unit itself. i’m waiting to play zelda in full when it launches and it doesn’t seem like the kind of game that benefits from being demoed, as its huge and open world and you can go wherever you want whenever you want. that being said the controls were nice and combat was simple and fun. im glad swordplay got dumbed down a bit in favor of being craftier with how you fight by using different materials and items at your disposal
speaking of the unit itself, the switch is pretty handy. there’s little buttons on the back you hold down to “unlock” the joycon from the unit, and to put them back you just slide them back in. the joycon itself is pretty versatile, i like it way more than the wii remote in contexts where you have to hold it sideways. the pro controller was also pretty comfy, though obviously price is an issue as usual. ive got 2 extra joycon on the ready though because those i will have a use for
arms requires 2 sets of joycon to play local 2 player, which makes sense. arms is surprisingly fast paced and not as intensive as wii boxing which makes it overall easier to play. the mechanics are pretty solid and i’d like to see more of it
snipclippers is like a boyfriend/girlfriend game. if youre not really young its something that’d be kinda awkward to play with anyone else
splatoon 2 is neat, i mean its basically the same base splatoon game as of right now. i played a few rounds and tried the new splat dualies and i can’t really have an opinion on them right now since i was playing with the unit wired down, which made the gyro controls harder to handle
sonic mania is FUN, im glad its coming to switch. i was able to jump right in and found a bunch of cool new pathways in both green hill and studiopolis. no mirage saloon, though. the cool thing about the switch is that they joycon are 2 different controllers, so by default you can play co-op right out of the box
bomberman is bomberman. it was fun to see all the different colors have the unique personalities and things got heated even when playing with strangers. i forgot how fun a good bomberman match can get
when we left we got a spiffy pin and switch logo cookie. overall a fun time. didnt have to wait on very many lines, which i guess comes with it being a private event
