The Artificial Art Debacle (artists are the first people this ever happened to)

they're either starving to death or draw pictures of dog men peeing in each other's mouths for a living so i have some sympathy

Excellent point tbh

It's hard to explain to people that I don't want them to be starving artists; I want them to create art without being Lars Ulrich about it, because nobody deserves that anguish and negativity

It's largely a non-issue blown out of proportion by techbros who lacked any discipline, drive or ambition to learn how to draw their anime porn in the first place from what I see. Excluding the very vocal minority though AI art could have some useful applications for artist in the form of maybe generating concept drafts, models, and using those as basis for creating your own works kind of like how in Sims you start with the premade home before drafting your own from scratch or something. It's not much but it's one positive for artists at least, just another tool that you can use or not.

I'm gonna take the middle ground stance and say the people dooming about their careers as artists are just as insufferable as techbros. That's about all I can say though
I didn't mean to post that on the fucking dupe account jesus christ

AI is a great tool for generating reference/inspiration and awful for anything else art-wise

incredible for comedy content tho

the first person to create an AI that automatically adds hands to a picture for you will become a millionaire

...the prospects of that are not currently looking so hot

I'm not sure I have any coherent thoughts about this, but the whole situation feels gross. Spritey touches on the unreasonable expectations some people have of the artists they hire but the fact that those same people now have a way to reduce the whole process to input/output and cut out the artist has me a little more than "anxious," I absolutely loathe that it has come to this. The technology itself is remarkable and it's very easy to imagine how it could expedite various tasks in the hands actual artists with massive workloads in industries like film or video games, but the knock-on effect of devaluing art more than it already has been is a rather hefty price to pay.

We're basically just merging with our technology, the lines will be more and more blurred and eventually AIs will count as people themselves. Because people have unlocked the knowledge required to build this type of tech, it'll never stop and it'll only speed up (barring total societal collapse).

I think we should focus less on the ethics of information distribution and more on the ethics of physiological human needs, because right now we're looking at art as something with a monetary Value, but the value was generated by the person who did the work. This also means additional value was generated by the people who worked on the algorithms required to process multiple pieces of art into a new piece of art. It's basically impossible to keep track of this and ensure everyone involved is compensated (NFTs are a hilariously awful example of people trying, as were napster lawsuits), so for me the core issue is that somebody would require monetary compensation to live a fulfilling life in the first place. It's great that creativity is becoming more boundless as work becomes easier to do, but it's terrible that we aren't adjusting the way civilization is structured to account for this. In "The Jetsons" we see the main character able to support a family when his only job is pressing a button; in real life he would be fired and the button would press itself

all jokes aside ive used ai generators for inspiration when drawing stuff for my game. for that kinda shit its rather handy and i dont see it becoming much better than for that kinda thing or quick illustrations for dnd campaigns

i think actual sentient ai is a very long way off though. its way too hard to simulate a brain, we can barely make our current writing bots not go full on "gas the jews" in only 24 hours

Update: the Art People have now moved on to hating alt text for images, because describing the content of an image for blind people's sake happens to make it easier for an AI to crawl for it. Now I know I need to hide my art from disabled people, lest my patented bitmap grid be used to make someone's world brighter against my wishes

Still no word in the TwitterVerse from notably-talented professional artists whose skills are actually in high demand, I guess they don't care about this for some mysterious reason

This site needs more options for rewarding content that people will predictably hate. I should be able to reverse my Good Sh*t button to an "I don't think so buddy" button when I want to play devil's advocate

It's more of an economic problem, really. If Spritey didn't need EX he wouldn't mind not getting Good Sh*ts

A post that people disagree with isn't a bad post lol, this isn't reddit

Anyway this discussion has ultimately made me resent all artists, which is probably a common issue, which is probably why someone made a computer program that can bypass them. Maybe the solution is to continue insisting value exists where many people don't see it, to ignore any economic issues at play, and to hope any lost income will be fixed by draconian regulation that prohibits derivative works (e.g. the many works that we all grew up with that inspired us to create art in the first place). I'll hold my breath until this happens

Editor's note: Spritey later died from holding his breath and was never heard from again

I can't argue with the notion that artists are insufferable whiny pricks, but that doesn't in turn make me glad to see idea guys empowered by AI technology trained off artists' work without their consent. I don't have much hope for society adopting forward thinking solutions to such rapid technological advancement making humans obsolete.
likewise i dont think its unfair to say a lot of artists fucking suck. AIbros just suck way more. when the AI equilvalent of kright comes along maybe my opinion will change for now though i will continue to enjoy twitlongers about how AI art is killing and conversely, AIbros trying to convince those same ppl that it's true art because..........because it is!
