Shot in the dark, I wanna take a look over at the Gambling Parlor and the Brewery. Restaurant too, while we're at it.

Mostly, I want to take a look around the floor. Above the stage specifically. Any holes in the floor, loose floorboards, any way someone coulda' pulled this off from upstairs?

Stand on top of the stairs and trace a path from there to the thread and past, then check if any projectiles were thrown/shot/launched from there. Do the same from all the doorways and some select places in the audience.

The collective results of your investigations amount to the following.

-There are no sharp objects out of place within the Saloon itself. There is a knife lying in the mud outside the window in the eastern part of the north wall, however.
-It doesn't seem like there's any shenanigans going on with the floor between the two levels of the yellow building.

Time for a longshot. If I tie a thread to the ceiling matching our cut thread and huck a knife at it, can I get the same clean cut? If not, grab a bunch of knives to repeat the test, gauging if it's at all plausible that someone really skilled with knife throwing could pull it off.

You give this a few shots, getting a proper match on around your fourth pitch. It looks like it'd require luck or skill to duplicate such a perfectly clean cut, but it's far from outside the bounds of possibility. A trained person would be able to guarantee it, but it wouldn't be necessarily impossible for someone untrained if they somehow had a way to make it easier for themselves.

I repeat Partitio's test but backing up several feet every time I do it. What is the theoretical max distance I could be from the window or up the stairs before I can't make it anymore?

It looks like you could do this from as far away as right outside the Saloon, or in the edge of the Farrier. You could also do it halfway up the stairs to the Brewery before it would be impossible.

The stairs to the Restaurant do not work for this at all. The angle is not viable.

What kind of knife is it?

Looks like it's a combat knife. You could find these at the Army Post or the Officer's Club.

Pretend I'm a professional knife thrower for a sec.

You think I'd be able to toss a knife through one window, cut the string, and have the knife go out the other window?

This would be feasible to accomplish, yes. It'd be possible to hurl the knife through both windows and cut the string on the way.

Inspect the lighter found near Neil. Any dings or dents or what have you consistent with throwing it? I'll throw a comparison lighter for a test.

You check the lighter found near Neil. Sure enough, there's some definite dents and dings on it.

You throw around another lighter. The dents are pretty similar. You don't really think you could replicate a pattern of dents to confirm if it was definitely, 100% thrown vs. received them via some other kind of motion, but something happened to this lighter.

Are there knives missing from the Army Post or Officer's Club?

There are definitely knives missing from the Army Post. You're not sure how many, but they have been taken.

It looks like the Officer's Club knives have not been disturbed.

Which Saloon door was removed? Was it the one to the south...?

You check. The saloon door to the south is fine, and you walk through it, enjoying the stereotypical swinging.

The saloon door to the east, however, is missing one of its two halves.

If we burn one of those paper lanterns, does it produce the same ash as what's near Neil?

Um... I guess I'm also thinking, if a lantern falls on someone and there's a bottle with lighter fluid in the lantern... what kind of bruise does that make?
Sorry... I guess that's sort of specific.

Try Partitio's test again from the stairs but aim to throw it out the window this time. Is it possible?

Oh, Honoka! Did any of the lanterns feel heavier when you were putting them up...?

You burn one of the paper lanterns as you experience :akiraholdingbacktears:. It looks like the same ash, though that ash would be produced by several different things when burned. It's definitely less ash than than the total ash around Neil, though.

You fill a bottle, take one of the lanterns, and drop it on Tsavorae's back. It seems like that's in between. Heavier than the original Neil bruise, lighter than the bruise from a bottle alone.

It's possible, but you notice that no matter where from the Brewery stairs you throw it, the knife ends up landing relatively far to the west from where you found the original knife.

Honoka Kosakatua
No, they all felt about the same as each other.
