i know we at least have trigger and i like their stuff but i haven't yet seen anything that's really been able to match that feeling of overly emotional teary-eyed passion that gainax always hits so well and a frustratingly large portion of it is imaishi squandering his skills on low budget cheaply animated shit that he came up with in five minutes

at least though apparently the remaining gainax employees are trying to work on a sequel to royal space force and we have the new evangelion coming out... someday, plus there's the FLCL sequel series that I'm cautiously optimistic about and the new godzilla movie which was directed by anno and people are saying it's like if gainax made a godzilla movie so i really wanna see it. there's a showing of it on tuesday where i live

either way ive just been thinking about a lotta this shit recently. gainax is probably my favorite animation studio in existence and they inspire me so fucking much as an aspiring animator. i have a void in my heart that im trying to fill

Kill la Kill was a good show with a lotta great characters and top notch animation (mixed with not so top notch animation) but i just couldn't get into it as much as I got into Gurren Lagann. I dunno why, I just wasn't as attached to the characters and story. which is weird because it was the same exact writer-director team.

Kiznaiver was also pretty good. I mean it bothered me somewhat that all the characters were just copypasted anime archetypes but eventually I found myself wrapped up in the story. Though it wasn't as over-the-top as a Gainax show, it was comparatively more of a subtle character drama. and again it just didn't have that like... spark.

I know I sound like an asshole when I say that but there's just something that Gainax always makes you feel that wasn't present. sometimes I wonder if it's just that I've become too much of a cynical douche to feel that Gainax feeling anymore. but I dunno though. For me Boku no Hero Academia is the last show to kinda come close to that feeling, every episode tries to have a tear jerker moment and is really over-the-top and melodramatic.

i felt like kiznaiver was unsure of itself. it was as if it kinda wanted to go Full Gainax Mode but somewhere down the line the plot got restrained. don't get me wrong; i enjoyed it a lot, but i think a lot of potential was wasted on it. still, i'll always keep tabs on whatever Trigger is doing.

gotta say though Wit Studio is coming out trumps for me. just recently watched Koutetujyou no Kabaneri and i gotta say it's definitely the slickest anime i've ever seen in terms of production. every single cel is gorgeous, you can tell the team put a lot of love into it.

Trigger still has a promising future though. If we're going by their wiki; Gainax dropped Nadia and then 3 years later Evangelion came and changed the game. For Trigger, in 2013 alone we had the witch academia film THEN Kill La Kill, 3 years later we get Kiznaiver and Luluco and in January next year the Witch Academia series.

And these are all very well received shows(well; idk really know about Luluco to be honest) from a studio that's still trying to find itself and it's style. It's clear they're trying to become the next gainax but imo they have the potential to be more.

tl;dr there's so much more quality animation and anime in general nowadays it's almost crazy. trigger is still on the come up. dont be too sad.

TRIGGER is really Imaishi's playhouse, so the work they crank out is going to probably max out at the caliber of Kiznaiver. They are making a series out of Little Witch Academia, which is also exciting.

Anno's Studio Khara and Production I.G. still retain a good number of the other Animation Directors that used to frequent Gainax projects, but they tend to focus more on Full-Length features rather than series (though they are heading the 2nd Season of FLCL, which Anno and Production IG were both heavily involved in.)

If you're REALLY looking for quality close to GAINAX and MADHOUSE's golden age, I suggest really taking a look at MAPPA's series. Maruyama was a co-founder of Madhouse and is constantly working with animation favorites from GAINAX and Manglobe, on his studio's projects. MAPPA is only about 5 years old, but their resume is riddled with high-quality animation, and a good number of their projects are critically acclaimed.

Just some quick suggestions. Sadly, GAINAX's power team of directors is so heavily divided now I don't see their studio making a comeback.

Nice, I'll have to give MAPPA's works a whirl. are there any in particular that you recommend I start off with?

Not the man himself, but I'd definitely say you need to give Kids on the Slope a shot. Everyone who's watched it is very fond of it and it has a great op/soundtrack in general.

Kids on the Slope is easily getting my endorsement as well, and it was one of the first times BAHI (Space Dandy, One Punch Man, Ping Pong) got serious acknoledgement for his animation sakuga style. Also the narrative and characters might make you cry.

Zankyou no Terror (Watanabe, Yoko Kanno, Koike) definitely has a darker, serious vibe. And it almost feels like watching an episodic feature film. It has a powerful message, and is a SERIOUS critique on Japanese society. It caused a lot of fires because it sympathized with a famous political figure in Japan that was extremely controversial in his demonstrations of patriotism.

Punch Line! is a VERY odd show. Fun humor, fun story, fun characters, but it's stupid. Like, REALLY stupid. Enjoyed it for the animation and the sheer silliness, but you have to turn your brain off for it.

The Rage of Bahamut series isn't a personal favorite, but I can't deny the craft. They really took care to make that show beautiful.

Teekyu is the savior of anime. You can finish all 7 seasons in like 2 hours.

GARO: The Carved Seal of Flames is a fucking masterpiece. It's based off of a popular live-action series, but it tells it's own story and they REALLY own it. I can't even begin to explain all the things that show does right in terms of story telling.

Yuri!! on Ice is their current project this season, and it's a spectacle to watch animation wise but it may be too soon to give a recommendation.

I would also recommend keeping tabs on Madhouse still. Maruyama, as a founder, still has his team work on projects with them and Madhouse made shows like Death Parade, Hajime no Ippo, One Punch Man, and a slew of great classics.

I've been meaning to watch kids on the slope, but Zankyou no Terror, Punch Line, and Rage of Bahamut were all very enjoyable.
I picked up Pnch Line mainly cause it had Kotaro Uchikoshi on board and I wouldn't say it disappointed in that aspect.
Rage of Bahamut turned out very well, in my opinion, for something based on some gatcha based browser/mobile game.

Gotcha covered, my friend. I kind of picked series out of context of the thread, but if you want I can recommend some others shows that are more off the beaten path.

thanks for reccommending all those shows, i have to check them out for sure. the only one ive seen or even heard of is punchline, which was indeed pretty stupid, too stupid for me to get past the second or third episode. but i still wanna check out those other ones.

also ive since seen shin godzilla and im regretful to report that i was dissappointed.

it was kind of refreshing because the movie was cut and shot exactly like evangelion, complete with big bold white captions randomly popping up and abrupt smash cuts directly after important lines of dialogue. but the whole movie was politics and them figuring out how to beat godzilla. which you'd think would be good because some of evangelion's best episodes are when it shifts to a more monster-of-the-week show and its just NERV strategizing and figuring out different inventive ways to beat increasingly incomprehensible eldritch monsters, but the problem is there was so much politics and strategizing that it left no room for character development. everyone was too one-dimensional for me to give a fuck about them. which sucks because with gainax i always expect to cry my brains out but the movie had none of that.

bleh. maybe i'll like it better on a later watching knowing what to expect.
