A good example of a Paleo explosion would be the volcanic eruption that created the La Garita Caldera in the San Juan Mountain range.

The eruption took place somewhere between 18 and 40 million years ago and left deposits of ash over 28 thousand square kilometers.



To put the force of this explosion into perspective, the Tsar Bomba hydrogen bomb puts out roughly 50 megatons of force, whereas the Garita Caldera eruption was somewhere around 250,000 megatons.



To give you an idea of what this might have looked like after the explosion, here is a shot of the La Cumbre volcano as viewed from the international space station. Similar in physical size to the La Garita Caldera, this is the size of hole that may have existed at the site of the Caldera some 20 million years ago.



Suffice to say, that is quite a significant paleo explosion.
