I think 18+ is the way to go. I’m glad I joined the whole Internet forum craze at a young age but it was probably not the best thing for me (I was younger than 16 and it was MFGG but still)

Idk some teenagers are cool but just let ‘em wait or let ‘em lie? It’s kinda weird to talk to kiddos on the web when you’re a grown ass adult imo.

Very concise and accurate. If 18+ is the official policy then it's not our fault/problem if someone decides to lie about their age online, which is famously the easiest thing ever. If 16+ is the official policy then we're saying "hey kids, come on in" which makes me feel supremely uncomfortable

Honestly we all lucked out. I joined MFGG when I was 11 years old. Back then, it was luckily a forum full of other children/teens with a few adult supervisors here and there, which is so innocent compared to a forum of 30 year olds who officially welcome teens. But still, if one of the "oldbies" felt like treating my mind like play-doh, they could've done it and I'd only be feeling weird about it in restrospect. If one of these people asked for my address to send me Cool Mario Stuff I would've given it to them. It's a whole can of worms that is not worth opening considering 16 year olds aren't interesting to talk to anyway

I can sort of understand the setiment here but also 20s you are for sure an adult.
I feel more comfortable talking to a 20 year old than a 16 year old and unless you're talking to Jimmy Neutron there are very clear differences from 16 to 18 and even 18 to 20/21.

I get that but in the context of misinterpreting adult things theres not a huge difference is what I mean

18 is where the line is drawn because we can't realistically do a psychological profile on every person to determine their impressionability

There are apparently people here in their late 20s or early 30s who are still teenagers mentally; that doesn't mean it's appropriate for them to seek out real actual teenagers

Also your point works better the other way around. Why is it so important to welcome 16-17 year olds; how is it more beneficial to us compared to allowing 18+ year olds (which absolves us of all legal responsibility)?

Again, nobody here is a pedophile I'm sure, but some of the language being used here is strikingly similar to what I've heard from "minor attracted persons". Using myself as an example to prevent hurt feelings, if someone dramatically younger than me seems to be on my level, it's not a testament to their maturity; it's a testament to my mental illness and lack of behavioral development

18 isn't an age when a person magically becomes an adult - it's an age where society at large has decided to place the cutoff point where one can reasonably assume this person can navigate the adult world. Some people reach that point sooner and others later. I'm not sure it should be left up to our board of neurodivergent antisocialites to make that judgement case-by-case

When you decide to take it into your own hands and say "okay but some teenagers are cool"........no they aren't, they really aren't. It's weird to think kids are cool once you know they're kids. It's embarrassing to think somebody is cool and then find out they were born the same year "Shadow the Hedgehog" came out. Playing devil's advocate for this is a huge red flag and not a hill worth dying on

If you guys still don't feel weird about it here are some other fun comparisons:

• Most of us joined MFGG when current 16 year olds were toddlers, infants, or not even born yet
  
• People who are currently 16 were born years after 9/11 happened
  
• If you were born in 1987 or earlier, you could realistically have a 16 year old child yourself
  
• The Nintendo Wii came out when current 16 year olds were still shitting in diapers
  
• The first iPhone came out when current 16 year olds were still shitting in diapers
  
• When Minus World was founded, current 16 year olds were entering kindergarten

I think like 90 percent of MW are diagnosed or medicated for neurodivergence.

I want to say again that when you interact with someone who is younger or is a lower functioning person, you don't stop treating them as a human, but you have to make concessions and adapt and I don't think it's a good idea to force that onto folks here when it isn't a necessity to have younger folks.

Also, I know that some of you will use their age as a tool of deflection. You've done it before.
