DAY 4 - I Fought the Law and the Law Lost

I keep thinking the thread on the ceiling is set up way different than everything else, but...You check all of the other lanterns. They're all strung up with yarn, not thread, though it doesn't look like the thread is set up any differently than the yarn.
Can I check the new outhouses for anything someone might have hidden inside them?
There seems to be a lot of information to review here. McJango makes some notes.
Neil Marshall
Death Location / Location Details
- He was on the Saloon floor, near some chairs facing the stage.
- Shards of glass scattered near him. The shards appear to be from a bottle.
- The liquid in the bottle has been matched to Butane. This could be sourced from the Tobacconist. As it appears butane is available in the form of lighter fluid, which comes in small containers. It appears some of these containers are indisputably missing.
- A lighter was lying in the charred section with plenty of ashes around him.
- A piece of thread is tied to the ceiling right above the Neil zone. The thread on the ceiling ends in a sharp, clean cut. It's sturdy white thread, of a surprisingly short length. The thread was sourced from the Tailor.
- A knife lying in the mud outside the window in the eastern part of the north wall. The knife is a combat knife most likely from the Army Post.
Cause of Death / Body Status
- Burned alive
- Neil also has a nasty bruise on his upper back.
Current Theory
- Someone tied a thread to the ceiling and hucked a knife at it to cut the string and dump the Butane on Neil. They then threw the lighter to set him on fire.
Other Notes:
- the knife could not have been thrown to hit the thread and go out the window from Neil's position.
Sightings:
- Elster noticed Neil investigating the Courthouse
- Elster & Agent Evangeline & North Star noticed Neil in the Lobby talking to Hollywood Bowl
- Honoka helped Akira and Neil set up decorations before the party
- Lynne, McJango, Partitio were sitting with Neil at the same table in the Saloon before he died.
- Lynne and McJango were at the table when Neil was set on fire
You lot are horrible people, just the worst. Except the animals. You're okay. Unless you're the one who knocked me out cold in which case BAD. VERY BAD.
I woke up to a pleasant message elegantly carved into my nightstand. "YER TIME HAS COME, PARDNER". Aaallllrighty then. I'm leaving! I had some investigating I wanted to follow up on so I headed down toward the cemetery, seeing Bud and Hollywood hanging out there already. A quick cursory glance was all I wanted of there so I moved onto the Train Station. I didn't see anything new around, despite my best efforts, but around that time I heard a train whistle go off which was new.
With my time in that area done I decided to go take a look at the west side of our lovely town arrangement. Minus the... large centipede... no offense. I headed along the south side of the map toward the west and took a look at the livestock corral along the way. Ah, a testament to man's hubris and domination of nature. Fascinating! I pushed further north toward the Army Post.
As I approached I heard gunshots from the center of town. A quick peek from around the corner of the purple building revealed a masked person running toward my general direction. Not ideal, considering, y'know, the gun. I ducked into the Army Post and looked around for something to defend myself with, but I was a bit too late. I heard their footsteps sprinting into the building and was face to face with this incognito aggressor before I could react. And they had a gun. Aimed directly at me. Now, being the heroic detective I am, one who would never cry or scream or piss his pants when danger showed up, I was prepared to accept my fate and be one with nature once more. Buuuut instead all I got was a click sound in front of my face. I let out a smug chuckle as we were now clearly on equal ground. Except he then grabbed a nearby bottle and smashed it over my head, putting me out cold. Thankfully I'm still alive... unless this is heaven and heaven's really just a western movie set. Or it's hell. That's more likely.
And... that's the end of that. Thanks for nothing, masked bastard.

This was brought up but I don't think anyone ever checked it so hang several tailor strings with weights on the ends (not going to sacrifice any more of my cute lanterns after my party was already RUINED again) and try throwing various sharp objects to test if the cut they make in the string is distinctive or if it's impossible to tell. A knife of the type we found in the mud, various other knives, shurikens if we have them, improvised weapons like glass shards or metal strips. For good measure also try shooting one with a gun, though I doubt it's that given no indication of a gunshot.
Examine the Chapel's hole in the floor?

It looks like as long as the weapon is a professionally made sharp weapon, such as the knives or the shuriken, it can produce a clean cut of the one that the original thread has. The improvised weapons create imperfect cuts that could be identified as different, while the gunshot leaves a ragged end.

It appears to have been dug by hand, and goes down several feet, until it hits a steel floor.

...Let's just get into it, okay?
I wanted to try to bodyguard the events tonight, so I kept my guns nearby all night. I started my night briefly trying to get into the archives and then the trapdoor, but I didn't accomplish anything, so I just went over to the saloon. I went in through the gun store entrance, seeing Not Shane enter saloon when I arrived. I followed him, and he went behind the bar while McJango was working away in the corner. I headed up into the restaurant after that. I was the first one up, so I just waited for a little while.
![[Image: lynnenormal.png]](https://i.postimg.cc/vTZPc5rr/lynnenormal.png)
Bud was the first one to join me as he started cooking. McJango came upstairs after that, and then a gunshot startled me. Can you stop doing that?! Bud gave me some of his...delicious! Cactus soup after he finished it, and then Hifumi came up. As the four of us just kind of hung out for a while, we heard a loud train whistle. Zalsarona arrived a little bit after that, and that was just who I was waiting for! The two of us started cooking, and McJango headed back downstairs after that. Then Derek came up to make some sandwiches, and Hifumi joined him, though he didn't seem too happy about it. [b]Akira was the next one to show up, but she just kind of annoyed us about the cake for a little bit. Bud left around this time, and after a while, so did Akira. And then I realized I had to go, so I let Zalsa finish up by herself. Sorry about that! The saloon was surprisingly empty when I got back down, minus some decorations, but I just left for red to go see how the duels were going.
As I arrived, Roland was helping McJango back up before facing off against Reginald, who was wearing a floppy hat for whatever reason. It was a pretty quick fight. Cascabela was also here, playing with firework poppers, and then Roland offered to fight me. I was only going to bodyguard, but I went ahead and let him beat me up. He's pretty good at it! And then I just stayed here to bodyguard for a while, and I certainly saw a lot! Here's a quick rundown:
-Akira fights
-Reginald leaves
-Nico and Jessica arrive
-Bud fights
-Akira leaves
-Hollywood Bowl and Not Shane arrive, the latter holding a saloon door for some reason
-North Star arrives in costume
-Nico fights
-Evangeline arrives and I forgot to talk to her tonight, yikes!
-Jessica fights
-Bud leaves
-Ranger fights and actually wins
-Kroos leaves
-Not Shane fights, then Evangeline, then Cascabela
-Zalsarona arrives
-I finally leave for the party as North Star steps up to fight, and I pass by Hifumi bringing sandwiches on the way out
I arrived at the saloon, hoping to make sure nothing ruined Akira's birthday! You know, again. Neil, Akira, and Honoka were already here when I showed up, and later, we were joined by Nico - who talked to Honoka - and then Ranger. The party officially started around then, and Akira started singing while Ranger played some tunes. As I had some cake, I did see some more people arrive - Not Shane, McJango, Partitio, and Hifumi, in that order. Then I saw Cascabela playing with her poppers again, and then, suddenly...the room felt a little hotter, and I heard Neil scream. I looked over, and...
![[Image: lynnescared.png]](https://i.postimg.cc/fTk2sjTZ/lynnescared.png)
...Neil had suddenly become engulfed in flames. He tried to get to the exit so the rain could help, but before he could make it, and before any of us could really do anything...he collapsed to the ground, dead.
Akira started screaming at everyone, and Ranger quickly left to the north. Partitio, who I guess went upstairs without me noticing, came back down to see what had happened, and he and Akira left south. I...wasn't really in the mood to stick around after that either, so I left with McJango to the east. He went to his dorm and I went to mine.

...I saw an innocent man lose his life right in front of me, and I couldn't do anything to save him. And apparently, Roland got shot after I left. I guess I wasn't much of a bodyguard tonight, huh?
Are there windows in the rooms upstairs above the Saloon? Does it look like anyone opened them and went outside through there? I'm guessing there might be some prints outside if that happened, b-but maybe there were prints anyway because of the rain? Or they got washed away...
Also, um, could I see Mr. Bowl's film?

You notice a dent on the rafter above the north window of the Restaurant, similar to the one that was found above the Funeral Home window a couple nights ago.
Quote:Also, um, could I see Mr. Bowl's film?
Hollywood Bowl
Sure. Here's the one Ranger asked me to make.
The film starts with Ranger excitedly explaining his plan to Bowl, while they're both in the Lobby. They step out of the Lobby, and you watch on film as Ranger crosses the street, entering the Saloon right as Hifumi leaves the Saloon and heads over past Bowl, going behind him. Nothing much happens for a bit, before the film turns upwards to catch the north window of the Restaurant opening, and Ranger sticking his head out and waving. He swings a horseshoe tied to a rope up, catches it on the rafter, and begins to climb up the wall by using that as a grapple. As he does this, the camera ducks down for a minute, to catch Not Shane as he leaves the Saloon and walks down to the west.
Moving back up, the camera now catches Ranger on the roof of the Saloon. He strikes a few cool poses, and then shivers a bit, before yelling that hey it's late, maybe we should make this one short. Bowl shouts back agreement, and the camera moves with him as he goes down the street to the west, following Ranger as he goes to the edge of the roof. Ranger backs up a bit, and leaps to the Water Tower, catching the ladder about halfway down. He grunts, then slides down the rest of the way, walking over to Bowl and asking him if he got that on film. Bowl confirms, and Ranger shakes his hand, before Bowl turns it off with the shoot over.
