The reviews are in, it's kino. I've been looking forward to the game but I've kept my expectations tempered, very glad to see a lot of people really like it. I checked out some of the spoilers on YouTube and the game looks bonkers.

Can't wait to monkey around for myself, maybe I'll sculpt some genitalia to share with the thread.

I want to believe this game is good but I'm highly skeptical, this seems like Nintendo is forcing it a bit _too much_

like release a new console with no games other than a mario kart (people love mario kart and will buy it for that alone) that makes everyone mad so they have no other game to play with their console for months (hell even the expansion packs are taking a bit to come out, kirby is august I think?)

I was hearing some rumblings a while back that reviewers did try the demos they had at like the nintendo store and were pretty unimpressed after the initial excitement wore off. published game review scores don't really mean anything to me

and it also just feels like super wreck it ralph disney idk that all rubs me the wrong way too

but I still want to believe and I hope I'm wrong, it just feels positioned in a way where its something they don't really believe would work on its own merits you know

I can't fault anyone for taking issue with the game's tone as it's a pretty radical departure for the series. The lyrical songs are cringe, Nintendo lucked out once with Jump Up Superstar and have been pushing it ever since.

As for the actual game itself, I see no reason why opinions can't turn around once having the complete experience in context. I believe previews of the game were incredibly controlled, jumping between saves at different points of the game with a Nintendo rep guiding your play. Sounds like a sub-optimal way to enjoy any game in my opinion.

I guess it's possible Nintendo coerced a bunch of publications to not give this game below an 8, in desperate need of a win after being consistently embarrassed in the entire run of the Switch 2 launch, but it seems just as likely that the game is actually alright.

Not having enough games for the Switch 2 seems like a separate rail to grind, Tony Hawk 3+4 launched day and date along side other platforms. I've been having a radical time listening to other players in online crossplay do bong rips between rounds of Combo Mambo and Graffiti. The Shred is not Deadâ„¢

Available now on Xbox Game Pass or available for money on other platforms if you're a stupid dipshit.

It's definitely something Nintendo didn't have confidence in and had to create an environment for. It doesn't help that they aped (heh) the Odyssey team for it so they wouldn't have another 3D Mario ready even if they wanted to.

game sucks, is for babies, and is actually not a lot of fun so far. the gameplay is not incredibly smooth and it is not fun to chain moves together, throwing the chunk you're surfing on does not feel slick as hell

im sure it gets worse the more you play but i had a pretty shitty time with what i played so far, not looking forward to playing more

donkey kong looks like a bitch

They definitely did a Wreck It Ralph + Vanellope thing but the reference is so out of date that I don't even think it was on purpose

Everyone here thinks it sucks and it reminds me of Super Mario Sunshine so it's probably going to be my favorite game of all time

Old head nintendo fans are mean though, they could make a game called Princess Peach Sucks Your Dick and we'd be like "0/10 she didn't even lick the balls"

Yeah, the game is sick as hell. You can just remove every "not" from my post to reveal the truth. I'm having a lot of fun smashing shit, climbing up walls, and roll punching enemies. The moves all chain together in a really satisfying way. The game even has its own cap dive-like maneuver in the form of a roll off a ledge, then jump, then roll in mid-air. You can do a lot of cool jumps with that.

After beating the first boss I can say I'm totally on board with the emotional hook of the game. DK goading Pauline into a victory dance was very cute. A kid gaining self-confidence on her journey with her giant monkey is a tale as old as time, but the execution really sells it.

yeah like what do you care if they made a 3D donkey kong instead of a 3D mario, you'd probably hate that too

oh don't get me wrong aside from the disney ripof thing (would be real funny if they got sued for that) it looks really good and I'm so excited to play another game from the Odyssey team which is a game I got like all the moons in 3 times (would gladly play more but there's so many other games in my backlog I want to get).

it's just the whole way this has been presented has felt really weird so I'm skeptical. still getting it day one and dealing with the punishment if it sucks, donkey kong needs the money his games have always been great

Beat the first Sublayer, game is pretty decent and there's a bunch of shit pretty much everywhere while not having the levels be TOO big thus far. I will say that the main issue I figured I'd have with the game is both the game's biggest problem and also isn't as bad as I thought it'd be at the same time. There's a weird mixture of hidden stuff that's very well telegraphed and sensible... and then a lot of things that are just placed like an AI put them there randomly. The radar slam is clearly to try to help you out with this but it's kind of unreliable and I've gotten a lot of collectibles that flat out did not show up with it somehow. I do definitely like how easy they made it to get around the levels both naturally and with the menu options, and the map is fucking sick as a feature even if the controls on it are complete ass.

I absolutely hate looking at DK and them trying to force him to seem quirky is awful, I'm desperately hoping for some way to make him look like Rare's DK with the cosmetic unlocks but I doubt it'd really fix anything since they're so set on making him emote like a complete moron. Pauline's design isn't amazing either I kind of want her to go back into rock form. I do not like how cosmetics are tied to stat boosts, I've already made both of them look dumb as fuck for the sake of gameplay.

Also something I noticed IMMEDIATELY upon booting the game up and had to get used to but still kind of hate is how much the camera is jammed directly up DK's ass. It's way too close and there being no way to pull it back out is absurd. Any time the camera automatically adjusts to pull out for a better view, which it does in several instances, the game suddenly plays way better until it reverts back to normal. Hell, it's arguably easier to see shit sometimes when you're digging through caves than when you're walking around above ground because the camera adjusts appropriately, which is not at all what anyone should expect.

The first boss fight kind of confirmed my fears on how bad the combat in this game would be when they weren't working with gimmick enemies, I beat it in a single Bananza use in seconds with no threat to myself whatsoever. I really hope they just try to stick to gimmicks for the later ones, puzzle enemies suit this game way more than things you can just punch to death as funny as that is to say. I will say about Bananzas though I was very scared that they would repeat the "lug an explosive rock 5000 miles away to get the collectible buried in concrete" """""""puzzle""""""" the whole game but they give you a way to break it on command fairly quickly. Thank god.

I have a lot of nitpicks and complaints but the game IS more fun than I expected and I feel some of that Mario 64 energy traversing and learning the levels figuring out how to reach the next gold banana. Them unlocking skills is a cool idea though I wish that there were more move/ability unlocks rather than the vast majority of them being "do this thing faster". Devs, if you know something is too slow, just make the fastest speed the default and skip the bullshit. For the love of fucking god. I wouldn't mind stuff costing more points if it was interesting enough, knowing I'm going to have to save up tons of points throughout the whole game just to punch through the walls at reasonable rates in the future seems agonizingly stupid.

In all honesty I had this problem with Odyssey too. The actual hidden or challenge based moons were great but a large percentage were gutter trash randomly dumped places or in obvious ground pound spots like they just threw up their hands and said fuck it. I dont know if I would call this objectively bad because people seemed to like the sheer amount of shit to collect in that game, but I did find that it sort of devalued the moons in a way that was a bit confusing sometimes.

Maybe its worse here, and I believe it probably is due to the digging mechanic - but I think the Odyssey team just likes to do that expecting people to not 100% the game and just roll with whatever they find by sheer chance.

Yeah I think it's the Odyssey team's design choice because all of the same strange mistakes Odyssey made are present here on purpose, including buying tons of moons/bananas. I really don't like that philosophy, the well designed bananas are very fun to get but the ones I just stumble into by digging around away from anything interesting are fucking baffling. I would rather a reasonable, curated checklist to 100%. Instead there are a bajillion fossils placed randomly throughout the level tied to stat upgrades. At least they're pretty much just the purple coins from Odyssey.
