Deathborn
Hollywood Bowl
You know, I was hoping for a normal movie shoot. Was that so much to ask? Just wanted to get in and out and make a paycheck.

Honoka Kosakatua
If I'm being honest... I pretty much expected this once I got here and realized how isolated this place actually is.

Momoyo Himemushi
'Least it didn't ruin the place too much, right? If you guys collapsed the mine I'd be saaaad.

Agent Evangeline
Well. We all know what this means, and we're all prepared for it. All that's left is the authority.

The reason for the reactions is lying right in front of everyone.

A body has been discovered! @Pohatu has been found dead in the Ruined Mine!

Spoiler:

An evil laugh comes from behind the group. The four NPCs turn around to look at Deathborn, the only one to be quiet.

Deathborn
Yes, it has begun. My personal Killing Game! Nothing that happens in Silver Junction happens without my jurisdiction, and that applies to this as well. I, the evil emperor Deathborn, desire to demonstrate my power, and this Killing Game is the opening shot!

Hollywood Bowl
You know, nothing is stopping us from just walking out, is it? We could always get in the bus and-

Hollywood Bowl is cut off by an explosion, as the bus they drove in blows up. It's left in a burning, smoldering wreck.

Hollywood Bowl
...Well, it wasn't TOO long to a gas station. We can walk-

Deathborn activates a second detonator. Another series of explosions cause several boulders to collapse, completely blocking the pass out of Silver Junction. All that's left is mountains and desert in all directions.

Hollywood Bowl
Dangit.

Honoka Kosakatua
Well... nothing to do but to start investigating!

Oh dang, an incident out here? Well, don't worry, I'm an expert in these sorts of situations! You just beat up the culprit until they say sorry or die!

I guess we have to find who did this first, and then we can beat both them and the red guy up.

Well... I'd say I'm surprised, but I'm not delusional.. One way or another, I expected something like this to happen. At least it seems like everything at the Saloon went down without a hitch. Suppose only time will tell us that story though.

Well, I'm not squeamish at least. I guess I'll examine the body in the meantime. That's how this is supposed to go, right?

You investigate the Mining Equipment room. It seems a few pieces of equipment have been removed from here - some rope, a couple shovels, a lantern, a utility belt, and a hand-sized steel ball.

You examine Pohatu's body. It appears he has a lot of small puncture wounds, as if the metal dotting his body was driven into him by force. They cover him basically head to toe.

There are no other injuries.

Got a contact down at the Prosecutor's Office then, Mr. Deathborn? Ain't no other explanation for why I wasn't allowed to shut this place down.

Ain't that a doozy… just as we were all spinnin' yarns and breakin' bread, too. All due respect to ya and this empire o' yours you've built, Mr. Deathborn, but you oughta know now this ain't the kinda incident I can go and overlook. Ain't a theft one more heinous than swipin' another man's life.

Reckon we oughta compare notes if we're hopin' to stand any chance of crackin' this mystery open, but gettin' a recollection from everyone'll take time, and daylight's burnin'. Might as well get on the job by inspectin' that burnt pile to see what's all in it.

This is completely unacceptable. People die every day from preventable illnesses, there's no need for more bloodshed like this.

For now... I'll perform an Autopsy on the body, along with Roland.

Hmm hmm. Mr. Marshall, there are machinations here at far higher levels than you could imagine. But to answer one question... the Deathborn Empire does indeed have influence that reaches to the Prosecutor's Office.

I recommend leaving it there. For your own health, my legal consultant.

It sure isn't! I have a terrible track record with Killing Games, I wouldn't want to run ANOTHER one!

You investigate the metal. It appears that all the metal scattered in the Ruined Mine, both in Pohatu's body and in the rest of the room, is pyrite.

You don't find any additional information, but it's useful to confirm that there's definitely nothing else. Pohatu died from a lot of metal piercing him, the end.

You check out the burnt pile. It appears to be a burned pile of loose wood. A turned-on blowtorch with a wire tied to it lies on top of the pile.

You look at the blowtorch and the wire. It's a solid piece of wire, which could be found in Equipment in the blue building. The blowtorch appears to be nearly empty, with the wire tied around it in a way to depress the trigger and keep it constantly burning. You could find a blowtorch like this in the Blacksmith or the Army Post.

...I guess we should all line up and explain what we were up to last night. Not to sound overly suspicious, but right now we're all suspects, right? Maybe one of us saw something important to the murder.

Spoiler:

I started my night in the Agave dorms... pretty comfortable! Not the worst I've had to stay in when I go on these international expeditions. I don't mind sleeping bags so much... but after the third or fourth day I'm really wishing to go back to a regular bed...

...I digress. The Ranger was outside when I left. He asked me about someone named "Texas Red." I can't say I really know who that is, so I told him as much and went over to the Newspaper room. I wanted to poke around a bit and see if they were real.. don't laugh. I know they're just movie props, but some of them actually look like they were sourced from a museum, or at least something similar. The newest of the old papers I could find was from 1873. They don't seem to discuss anything super relevant to our... situation, but it's interesting by itself.

Next I went to the Bank via the Chapel, I was looking for a souvenir for my nurse, Angie. She likes antiques and stuff like this, so I grabbed her some coins. Maybe only about 2 dollars worth, honest... I also went to go see what the situation in the General Store was like. It's about what I expected, but there's no medicine in there. Until we get that storehouse opened up, I'm afraid I can't do anything serious to help with anyone's pains. I recommend rest and a hot beverage until then. Ginseng tea is a favorite of mine, it has several benefits for your heart, and...

I'm getting off track again. I saw that Zepelli fellow with a Red Horse. He left, and I went to go see the Stables. I saw Mrs. Zalsarona here killing the hog for the party later in the evening. She dressed the carcass and brought it into the saloon for preparation, and I went outside. Mr. Fikwerther was climbing the water tower. I suggest we all agree to stay away from that, I doubt Deathborn is going to supply us with a new one if we break it somehow. We saw each other, and I went around to join the party in the Saloon.

Ace Ventura, the King of Clubs, McJango, Marisa, Evangeline, Lynne, Roland, and of course Zalsarona were there mingling. Roland decided to destroy the Piano with a flying leap... which is a real shame. I actually know how to play, I was hoping to have some time later to practice a bit. I ended up at the same table as Deathborn, and we had a short chat. It was a tad strange, knowing he's keeping us all here now. I did learn that he's been the one writing some of the newspapers that I found. I wasn't planning on tying one on, I know Angie would kill me if she knew I was drinking on the job, but Mr. Ventura insisted. Momoyo was passed out on the floor by now, and Hifumi took my spot and enjoyed the rest of my drink before passing out herself. I decided to go back to my room and sleep it off.
I will save this patient!

You check out the Army Post and Blacksmith.

The Army Post is missing a flamethrower, but it looks much larger than the blowtorch in the Ruined Mine. The Blacksmith is missing a blowtorch of the type in the Mine.

Besides that, there's nothing of significance in the upper level of the mine. When you rappel down to the lower level, you notice an abandoned pair of gloves sitting here.

Ranger
Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around

Was an Arizona ranger, wouldn't be too long in town

He came here to take an outlaw back alive, or maybe dead

And he said it didn't matter, he was after Texas Red

After Texas Reeeeed~

Okay Marty you can stop narratin' now

Wasn't long before-

MARTY

Y'all I have to apologize for him he's been dead for 40 years and doesn't have nothin' better to do than hang around me all the time

Anyway, looks like there's been a murder, so obviously one of y'all is Texas Red in disguise, just as I 'spected. Let me tell y'all what I did last night so we can hopefully catch that dang outlaw.

I started in my dorm where I saw Derek Stiles and asked him about Texas Red. Then I went to the Gun Store 'cause I needed a new big iron and saw Strong Bad leavin' at the same time. Then I went to the Stable to try and figure out if them horses knew anything, but they didn't. So then I went on down over to the Sheriff's Office and asked Not Shane, Tsavorae, and Theodore Noise about Texas Red. Theodore just said somethin' weird 'bout bread and went over to the General Store. Madame Zalsarona came from the Army Post and went on south, then I went to the General Store m'self to do some shoppin' and saw Theodore leave. I also went to the cactus dorm 'cause I wanted a cactus. Hope y'all don't miss it. I dropped the stuff off back at my dorm and then went on down to the Saloon. Only Honoka and Ace Ventura was in there at the time, so I went on up to the Restaurant to grab some ketchup fer later then decided her singin' could use some banjo and I played along. Then King of Clubs came in followed by Agent Evangeline, then later Madame Zalsarona and Roland comin' in together and goin' upstairs followed by Lynne. Then Partitio, Momoyo, and Marisa came in, then those three who were upstairs came back downstairs and started servin' the food. Roland destroyed the piano fer some reason and then Akira Kogami showed up and smacked me off stage.

Now, I dunno if you know this, but that ain't very polite, I don't think you should do that and I would 'preciate if it don't happen again

Anyway, after that I left through the Farrier to go over to the Water Tower, where I set up my special trap to catch Texas Red. While I was doin' that I saw Reginald Fikwerther sittin' up on top. Now I figured what I'd do is set up some string to make Texas Red trip into some ketchup on the ground, then I'd haul him on down to the Sheriff's Office. While I was waitin', Theodore Noise showed up again ridin' on a cow but he didn't fall fer the trap. Then he came right at me so I pulled out my big iron but he tricked me and escaped! I dunno if he's Texas Red but that's mighty strange if y'ask me. Then I went to the Movie Theater fer some popcorn and went to bed.

Sounds to me like some people wanna know what went down. Can't blame 'em! Last time I was in a Killing Game, it wasn't easy. Spent most of it dead though.

Anyway! I woke up, and knew I had to check out that mine as soon as possible. So I ran down to Mining Equipment, though I didn't need to grab a shovel or a pickaxe. Brought my own favorites! Y'know, I named them? There's Alicia the shovel, and Fredrick the pickaxe. Two of a kind!

Once I had some rope, I went over to the mine and rappeled riiight into it. Did some really nice digging. Place is a nice vibe, that's for sure. Lots of silver, too. I could live down there if they let me...

Some time into the digging, Partitio showed up! He's a cool guy. Gave me a coin. Lemme tell you, that coin was delicious! Would eat again if he let me. What's a girl gotta do to get a bag of them? Me and Partitio spent our time digging together, and once we were done, we both climbed up together and went up to the north. Met Marisa coming from that green building, she's a cool gal. The three of us went to the Saloon.

That place was a riot, lemme tell you. Especially once they brought the food down. Spent some time talking with Marisa over the food, and then I decided to get some drinks. Ace Ventura sure knows how to serve them. In fact, I think I overdid it because I passed clean out. Nice time, though!

Didn't mean to keep you waitin'. Findin' Pohatu with more metal in him than a locomotive… I ain't gonna feel shame in admittin' it got my blood boilin' hotter than steam. Cooled my head, so I s'pose it's high time I get to tellin' you my tale. Won't help Pohatu to rest in peace none, but if there's any good in this night, I was able to make the acquaintance of a lot o' ya.

Left the ol' coat back home before I hit the long dusty trail, so I moseyed out o' Prickly Pear and up to the Tailor to nab a replacement. Ran into one Strong Bad while I was pickin' it out. Ya got a mighty colorful look to ya, fella!

Told y'all I'd be payin' a visit to the Bank, and I kept my word. Looked to me everything was in order, least when I passed through. Took a trip across the road from there and stepped inside that Mineral Storage. Won't be any shortage of pyrite 'round these parts, that's for certain! If you got it on your mind to ask why I was rootin' around the Orange Building, it's 'cause I wanted to see for myself what kind o' ground they have round these parts. No merchant worth his salt would pitch a tent on dirt like this on word alone.

Info's worth a pretty penny in my line o' work, but you only invest in what you lay your own two eyes on. Sounds like you share the principle, Mr. Marshall, huh?

I passed on through the mine, hearin' the sound of diggin' from within. Gearin' myself up in Mining Equipment, I ran into Mr. Roland and Mr. Zeppeli. As I remember it, Mr. Roland came down those creakin' stairs, and Mr. Zepelli still had dust on his boots as he stepped inside from the road. To finish up my preparations, I put boots on the stairs myself and bought a bucket from the Trading Post. Ms. Marisa Kirisame was scurryin' out of the Pharmacy like a dormouse out its nest. You an apothecary of some kind, miss?

Had all the gear I needed at that point, so I made my way back to the Ruined Mine. S'pose the room was a touch less ruined when I climbed down it than it is now… Ms. Momoyo and I had ourselves a good time workin' up the sweat of an honest night's work! Much obliged to have a conversational partner to make the work go by quicker, miss. You got yourself the musk of a miner! We oughta have ourselves a little dirt-movin' competition sometime. You win? I'll bring you an ounce of the finest Oresrush silver you can eat!

Once I had topped off a good bucket o' dirt, Ms. Momoyo and I hauled ourselves up and hit the road. We met up with Ms. Marisa Kirisame again and had ourselves a pleasant walk-and-talk on our way to get supper at Madame Zalsarona's event.

Y'all sure do know how to throw a hootenanny! Caught sight of Ms. Kroos, that fresh-faced Lynne character, McJango, the Ranger, Ms. Honoka, that Deathborn, Mr. Venture, and even a King o'... Clubs, was it? Work hard, and you get to play hard, so I mingled for a bit until Doc Stiles showed up and Madame Zalsarona brought down the supper.

Mighty obliged to ya, ma'am. You sure know how to make a free-roamin' merchant feel welcome!

Ol' Mr. Roland had some kinda spell, slicin' up the the piano. You okay there, partner? If work's gettin' to ya, you might consider takin' a rest for a spell. Change of scenery does a man wonders. Hard work's mighty commendable, but don't you go throwin' away your health!

Saw the Ranger leave after that, but I didn't have the mind to track where the feller was off to! My stomach was rumblin'! Madame Zalsarona makes a fillin' meal, but I rustled up some extra feed I needed after all that diggin'. Bud passed me by as I hit the road, and I found my path crossin' with Ms. Cascabela 'fore I made it out the door.

Appreciate the photograph, miss. I'm sure hootin' and hollerin' for you all along the rails, with the kind o' beauty you've got for yourself. You can rest assured I won't go forgettin' your face. When we wrap up here in Silver Junction, I might just have a lead on some outfits - finest silken fabric you've seen on this side of the continent - you might fancy.

Night's light was dyin' out, so I walked off supper by makin' my way down near Carpentry, where I spotted Ms. Nico Yazawa and struck up a conversation with Ms. Hifumi. Was pleasant-goin' right 'til sounds of poppin' came out of the building, a scream followin' em.

Don't know if that rattled Ms. Hifumi, but she made to wet her whistle at the Saloon, so I wandered my way back to the Green Building as Not Shane poked a head out o' Carpentry. Gave my coat a wash, then I nodded off to wait for the rooster's crowin'.
