I was going to get upset because I love hats but then I thought about it and realized you're absolutely right! God damn valve made bank and tricked video games into thinking that this kind of loot box bullshit was ok!

I fully believe L4D3 was in development at some point, until valve realized they can keep updating their flagship decade-old game indefinitely without losing money

Also underwater levels are bad game design. I've never played a single one I enjoyed. It's like "hmm how can we take these competent game physics and fuck them up so it's a chore to get where you need to be"

Rayman Legends and Tropical Freeze are as close as we’ve ever come and I still prefer the platforming stages. Water could be used effectively in conjunction with a platform level but it’s never enough on its own.

Actually I'll just make a list of things video games should stop trying to make work:

- Underwater levels
- Escort missions of any kind
- Necessary collectibles that are hidden without sufficient hints
- Any kind of "radar" mechanic for finding an item
- Making you backtrack through an area you've already been to without changing anything
- A million identical battles in RPGs

Will add more if I think of anything else

People talk shit about 3D sonic games but there's at least one thing they get right: when you touch the water it's game fucking over, because moving around underwater would be slow and boring

"Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite game."

Ah, I can refute those points though:

1. All the levels in Sunshine have water in them, but very few of them require you to do a lot of underwater navigation. I don't like the areas which do require it, but they're so few and far between that it doesn't affect the overall game

2. Blue coins are a nightmare, but they're not necessary to beat the game. I don't consider 100% completion a necessity for any game, so again this doesn't really detract from my enjoyment

3. Sunshine doesn't force you to backtrack; there are often multiple ways to get to where you need to be. Also, the courses progress and change as you work your way through their missions - and technically, each course except Corona Mountain has 7 slightly-different versions of the level geometry, one for each shine. So I would go so far as to say that from a technical stantpoint, Super Mario Sunshine is the least backtracky game of all time

(all things considered though I think Odyssey is my new favorite, it's like a celebration of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy and it feels nostalgic even though it came out last year)

What about Super Mario Brothers, the game where you are literally not allowed to go backwards?
