i remember reading a theory that peach staged the entire events of super mario sunshine so that after the piantas realized that they had been keeping mario, a known hero of the mushroom kingdom with a stable record of do-goodery, hostage for crimes he did not commit, they'd be on thin ice and would have no choice but to allow peach to assimilate the island as a territory of the mushroom kingdom. bowser played along because he wants any excuse he can to be around peach

Delfino had it coming with that trial system

They accused Mario of committing a crime, used a single eyewitness police sketch as evidence, then when Peach and Toadsworth objected the judge just overruled it. Mario didn't get a lawyer or even an inkling of a chance to argue his case. Delfino is probably jailing innocent people all the time

Then after Shadow Mario and the real Mario are seen in the same place several times, Mario is STILL technically being held against his will. What the fuck? For treating eyewitness reports with such importance, they sure seem to like ignoring events that are clearly visible to everyone in town. There are two police officers and they do nothing but stand by the plaza entrance, saying they're keeping an eye on you but if that were true they'd probably notice you traveling all over the fucking island

Also come to think of it, why was FLUDD just sitting there? Part of Peach's conspiracy? I think there's a guy standing near it and if you talk to him he'll be all "hey asshole, pick up this water gun and get to work" but it's never explained any further

Brentalfloss' Super Mario Sunshine with lyrics mentions this, it's another thing that always bothered me growing up

Mario is made out to be the bad guy for making the shine sprites flee. But there are literally dozens of random citizens who are keeping them hidden to use as leverage. Shouldn't delfino use the fucking emergency broadcast system to say "hey, if you have any shine sprites please give them back, they make the sun shine you piece of shit"

Well their justice system is already based on "if you look like the guilty person, you're them" so it wouldn't surprise me if they arrested all 3 for good measure

This game I wanna see

Luigi doesn't have a stable job and can't pay his massive property tax, so the bank reposesses his new mansion. He's extremely distraught at first until Mario suggests they go to Isle Delfino for a relaxing vacation. Once they arrive the police fail to recognize Mario, instead saying that these two guys look a whole lot like the ruffians who were stealing chickens last week. They're already in prison but might as well toss these guys in there too, just to be safe.
