I think we as a society tend to underestimate how every year since 2008 has sucked. 2020 was shocking but it wasn't really a massive change, it was more like the system we'd gotten lucky with for 40 years finally getting kicked in the balls and immediately throwing up everywhere

Yeah, for America it's as if 2019 was the last year a great deal of our unsustainable fantasy world ran on dying batteries but not everyone could see what was depleting
